Lacrosse midfielder stabbed multiple times

National lacrosse coach, Dale Walker, said that his team's preparation to compete in the Lacrosse World Championship this summer in Israel will be hampered as one of their best players was attacked and stabbed multiple times by an unknown assailant last Saturday and will be sidelined for several weeks.

It is reported that midfielder, Gregory Powell, was on his way home from a function at Pulse Entertainment Complex in New Kingston when he was attacked. STAR Sports understands that Powell's attacker demanded his phone and wallet and inflicted the injuries on the athlete after he refused.

After he was stabbed, he ran to the New Kingston police post and the police rushed him to the Kingston Public Hospital.

"The injuries are not life-threatening and the doctor says that he should make a complete recovery soon and that he can go back to training in a few weeks but it is going to set us back a few weeks because we are training continuously," Walker said.

Walker said that Powell is the best midfielder in the country.

Powell is also the coach of St Georges' College's Lacrosse team.

"This will affect them ( St George's College) now because they are one of the better teams in the high school competition," Walker said.

Meanwhile, Powell himself is hoping to be back in action soon.

"As soon as I remove the stitches then I will be back teaching my boys," Powell said.

Earlier this year, the Jamaica Lacrosse Association told STAR Sports that it was seeking funding to finance the trip to Israel.
