Cyclist killed in car accident on Marcus Garvey Drive

Around 10:30 a.m. yesterday, cyclist Cornel Gapur was killed after being hit off his bicycle by a Honda motor car while trying to cross the busy Marcus Garvey Drive in the vicinity of the Tinson Pen Aerodrome.

According to bystanders, he made it midway across the road.

"Him try to turn back but the car hit him and him flipped him in the air and drop on the windscreen," a bystander, who asked not to be named, said.

The 34-year-old was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Meanwhile persons who work in the Marcus Garvey Drive area are asking the authorities to erect more signs to remind pedestrians and cyclists not to attempt crossing the busy to roadway.

"They need to put more signs along the roadway because you have some signs when you going toward Portmore, but you need some more signs coming back these sides going into town," Damian Simmons, who works at Kingston Wharves, said.

Pedestrian bridge

Japheth Russell, a worker from the Tinson Pen Aerodrome, said too often persons using the bus stop in the vicinity try to cross the road without using the overhead pedestrian bridge.

"Dem do it all the time, but I can see why," Russell reasoned. "Where the bride is located, not a lot of people use that side. The bridge should be more down this side. You have way more people wanting to coss down this side."

The overhead bridge is located at the intersection of Marcus Garvey Drive and Eight Avenue, just over 300 metres from where Gapur met his fate this morning.
