Students wade dangerous flood waters in eastern St Thomas

Many students were forced to wade through flood waters in eastern St Thomas yesterday as torrential rain over the past two days rendered the Hordley Crossing main road impassable.

Principal of the Happy Grove School in Hector's River, Portland, Monique Grant Facey, told THE STAR that those students who braved the flood waters and made it to school yesterday were immediately sent home. She said some had to wade through the murky flood waters, as public transport operators refused to put their vehicles through the fording.

"I sent them back, and I got a call from someone saying that they were in Amity Hall because the bus driver said that he was not going back through the water, so he let them off at Amity Hall and some were seen walking through the water," Grant Facey said. "I am very nervous about it (students crossing flood waters) and that's why we are saying we wish that when they get to Golden Grove and the water is there that they would just turn back."

THE STAR understands that school was cancelled for the students at St Thomas Technical High School.

It is also reported that sections of Wheelers Field were also flooded.

"Water is coming from Hordley and Wheelers Field so the cross road is blocked," a resident of Amity Hall, Kayleen Bartley, told THE STAR.

Other sections of the parish, such as Port Morant and Poor Man's Corner in Yallahs were also under water.
