Help! My husband wants to kill me - Woman trying to get away from abusive partner
Corporate Area resident Joan Brown* says she is seeking the public’s assistance in getting a job in order to move from her community and far away from her abusive husband.
When the 28-year-old visited THE STAR yesterday, she was a picture of frustration as she explained how her three children were placed in state care in order to protect them from their father, who had viciously beaten them and even broke the arm of their 11-year-old son.
“I suffer from seizures and have to be on medication. But I really want to work because I need to leave the community, so that I can get back my children. Anyone in the area will tell you that I am a good mother, and I can’t rest well until we are all living under the same roof again. I just need the help to get away because I don’t want the next time my children see me it’s in a casket,” she said.
Showing THE STAR several police report receipts detailing the abuse and a four-year restraining order against her husband, Brown said those documents offer very little protection. She said that she has even moved out of her house and is now hiding in another section of the community.
She said that there are two warrants out for his arrests, but he has somehow managed to elude the police each time they try to apprehend him.
“Mi a beg the relevant authorities to just find him and do what they have to because mi can’t live like this. I am not saying that the police are incompetent or anything, but they didn’t take my matter serious until my husband used a cutlass and hit my son and broke his arm last year,” Brown said.
MOVED OUT
She said that in a bid to escape, she moved out of the matrimonial home after seeking assistance from the political representative in her area, who helped her to get a house from Food for the Poor in 2014. However, that did not make her life any easier.
“As soon as mi move, him bruk inna the house and start tief out the furniture them. He has broken my nose, chop mi, stabbed me in my chest, and hit me numerous times. Mi have a big docket down a KPH (Kingston Public Hospital), and I am forced to leave my home because I am afraid that he will either burn the house down with me or break in and kill me,” she said.
Brown said she is in the process of selling her home. She said that she is willing to pay rent in another community in order to have her children with her.
“I miss my kids very much, and it’s unfair that they are with the Government, and it’s not me that do anything wrong to them. I know that they are well taken care of because I visit them. I just want to move from here, so mi just want a little job and help so I can leave. Mi a beg the police dem to find this man. Mi don’t want him to kill me,” she said.
