A number of teachers and parents of the New Life Basic School in Dunbeholden, St Catherine, were the picture of happiness after the institution was gifted with school supplies last Saturday.

The gifts were made possible by former resident Andy Ballentine.

Ballentine donated books, bags, pencils, crayons, rulers and other necessary items for the new school year. Much gratitude was expressed on the occasion.

"My daughter comes to school here and I am very thankful for these items. It is the first time that I have seen this gesture and it is hoped that it will continue as this is where education starts," said a parent, Crystal Henry.

It was a view echoed by the operator of the four-year-old school.

"These items are very timely, and we appreciate the gesture as many of our parents and guardians have yet to buy school supplies. We are eternally grateful and hope it will help to strengthen our ability to mould these young minds," said principal Natesha Dyer.

Meanwhile, Ballentine said it was his duty to give help.

"I lived in the community for years and I am aware of the needs. So it is indeed a pleasure to assist," Ballentine said.
