Two British nationals arrested on alleged attempt to smuggle cocaine through airport

Two British nationals are in the custody of the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) following their alleged attempt to smuggle cocaine through the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA), Kingston on Wednesday.

This is the first cocaine seizure at NMIA since the start of the year.

Reports are that at about 4:25 p.m., FNID personnel were conducting security checks for passengers boarding a British Airways flight destined for London.

During routine interviews, a British man's actions aroused the suspicion of the police and his luggage was searched.

This reportedly led to the discovery of 7 kilograms (15 pounds) of cocaine concealed in the lining of two suitcases he had.

During the same screening process, another British national-- a woman her actions also aroused the suspicion of the lawmen.

A thorough search of her luggage allegedly revealed approximately 7.2 kilograms (16 pounds) of cocaine in the lining of her suitcases.

The combined street value of the cocaine is approximately PS454,400 (JMD 92.7 million).

Both individuals were taken into custody and are being processed.

Their identities are being withheld pending further investigations.
