NTFA launches flag football competition on Super Bowl weekend
The National Tackle Football Association (NTFA) has announced it will be launching the 2025 Secondary School Gridiron League (SSGL) Flag Football competition this Saturday, sharing the weekend with the National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl.
With the SSGL Flag Football competition entering its sixth staging, NTFA Executive Director Jerome Harriott is aiming to bring increased excitement and public attention.
He hopes to do so by kick-starting the competition one day before the Super Bowl, the most-watch game in the sport of gridiron football.
The 2025 Super Bowl, which will be played in New Orleans, will be contested by the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
"Football fans worldwide will be glued to their screens on February 9, watching the NFL Super Bowl. We're excited to bring that same level of excitement to Jamaica the same weekend, as our young athletes take to the field to compete for flag football supremacy," said Harriott.
"We're proud to provide a platform for boys and girls to develop their skills, build their confidence, and pursue their dreams."
The competition will see 11 of the top boys and girls teams from across Jamaica competing for the coveted KOC Flag Football Championship Trophy at Brooks Park in Mandeville.
The boys category will be contested by Munro College, Newell High, Mona High, May Day High, New Forest High and Black River High.
For the girls, B.B. Coke, Newell, May Day, Mona and New Forest will contest in the five-team category.
The competition, which acts as a development programme for the growing sport in Jamaica, is home to some of the best talents across the island.
The SSGL has seen a rise in interest from schools over the past few years, and the NTFA views the competition as a viable way for student athletes to achieve college scholarships for the next step in their sporting and academic careers.
With support from the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Sports Development Fund and the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association, the NTFA is confident of another successful staging.
