Magnum Queen gets baptised

Last summer, Shanekia Morrison, more popularly known as Suspense, took home the top prize in the Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall competition.

Five months later, the newly crowned Magnum Queen of Dancehall made an about-face, taking the plunge into Christianity. According to the champion dancehall deejay, the transition was a long-time coming, and it was catalysed by her win.

"The only thing that's going to be changing is my lifestyle. I'm not for hyping. I'm done with that. No more partying, unless I'm partying for God," she told THE WEEKEND STAR.

"The change was already there. It has been there. I was just playing stubborn. Then God started to give me everything I asked for. After the car crash, I asked for one more chance. I prayed and prayed to win. And I said after I win, I'm gonna give my life over, but I didn't, and I can't even begin to explain it. Everything was just falling apart."

Morrison took the Magnum Queen title, along with Symatic who was crowned King a short while after the car accident, which forced her to campaign and perform in a neck brace.

The retiring dancehall deejay told THE WEEKEND STAR that her life took a turn for the worse after praying for and winning the crown, and she believes it is because she did not make good on her promise to God.

FEELING BRAND NEW

"Things have picked up, but things got real bad. Some things happened to me last week; one whole week of stress. But now I feel brand new! I go on my Instagram live at 8 o'clock every night to minister to the people. It feels great to help somebody. There are some other little things, but I'm listening to the Spirit," she said.

When asked how she expects fans to react to her lifestyle change, Morrison said: "First, I was thinking, 'What are they going to think about it?' Then I prayed for it, and now it don't feel like nothing. I feel extremely great."

Although her life has not been entirely ironed out, Morrison believes she is on the right path. She has even began writing gospel music.

"I am actually writing gospel songs now. I already wrote two songs, and I got one I'm gonna cover. I want the complete change. I don't want to just jump out. I want to feel the way I'm feeling now when I'm singing these songs," she said.

As for the 'Suspense' moniker, she said: "I'm waiting on God to answer that question because Suspense is tied to the dance, but it was really chosen before that. I got that name because you never know what's coming next. I don't think I wanna change it. I might and I might not because I love my name."

Morrison is currently a member of Celebration Church in Portmore, led by Prophet Michael Carter.

"I have church on Tuesdays, Thursdays and then Saturday 5 a.m. prayer meeting," she said.
