Weh Dem Up To: Leroy ‘Don’ Smart is back with ‘Goodas’
Believe it or not, reggae singer Leroy Don Smart is not just back, he is ‘out and bad’ with his latest song, ‘ Goodas’, in which he declares that he wants a good girl in his life.
With an up-to-the-minute flow over a now dancehall beat, Smart, who ruled back in the day with a plethora of hit songs, is aiming to make his presence felt. He even has an accompanying music video which features no less a person than Internet sensation-turned dancehall deejay, Mackerel. It tells the story of a girl who is only there for the money.
“Leroy ‘Don’ Smart is back,” he told THE WEEKEND STAR in his usual braggadocio style, whisking out his cell phone to show videos, too many to count, of disc jocks in studio praising and playing Goodas.
“Selectors all over the world are playing it. It is in rotation in New York, Miami, England,” he elaborated, calling out names of DJ/selectors such as Boom Boom, Waggy T, ZJ Ice and Arif Cooper. Smart has even come in for praise from controversial selector Foota Hype, who noted recently that the singer has made a comeback with a song that can fit into the current mix.
Smart admits that he has been searching for a banger for a few years now, and says that he is happy that he has found it. “It did rough, but it feels good to have a song that people gravitate to,” stated the artiste, who is known for being dismissive of the title ‘veteran’ and prefers to be referred to as a dancehall legend.
Among the big tunes which secured Leroy Smart a place in reggae music history are Ballistic Affair, Mama Liza, She Just a Draw Card, Talk About Friends, Pride and Ambition, Ethiopia, Trying to Wreck Up My Life and Badness Don’t Pay.
It was in January that Smart gave what was hailed as a good performance at the annual two-day roots and culture festival, Rebel Salute, held in St Ann.
He says that although he has not been active on the local scene much since that performance, he has been doing shows, but his “ting is overseas”.
Don Smart states that Goodas is a good note on which to end the year.
“I can’t complain about the way things have turned out for me for 2019. I started it off on a high and am closing it on a high note,” he said.
