Becky takes on drug empire in ‘Krakkaz Kingdom’

The producers of the film Krakkaz Kingdom are hoping Jamaicans will be enjoy the show when it airs on television next month.

Rayon Walker, the director of the production, said the movie aims to showcase women empowerment and leadership with a twist.

The storyline in Krakkaz Kingdom revolves around a drug empire, based in one of Kingston's inner-city, which is dismantled by a female police officer called Becky.

Becky is played Donnaree Gray.

"There is gun, drugs and corrupt cops; but there is this one female cop that is willing to risk or give anything to end all of this that is happening in the country," Gray said of her role.

She explained that being the protagonist in Krakkaz Kingdom was not hard. The 32-year-old, who grew up in Jones Town, south St Andrew, said she developed the streets smarts that has enabled her to understand how the criminal underworld functions.

"I always wanted to be the person to put a stop to this. Being in this movie gives me the opportunity to play that role, and I want to encourage other females as well to do it. This is something I want to see done in reality," Gray said.

For Walker, he is hoping the Jamaican audience will tune in to the movie when it is released, as it promises to be the greatest source of entertainment, while we continue to grapple with the restrictions caused by COVID-19.

" Krakkaz Kingdom shows a different side to females. We normally have male-dominated films showcasing men as superheroes, like Third World Cop. We just change the face of that, putting a female cop as the leader," he explained.

Walker told THE STAR that this is his fifth production, as he previously produced Blind Shotta and Ghetto Pree. He received the Best Director and Best Actor awards at the 2012 Jamaica Film Festival and is hoping this latest venture can give him another award.
