Romain Virgo delivers after mid-stage scare
‘Virgonation’ showed up in full force for Romain Virgo at his Gentle Man concert in Kingston on Sunday, filling up every nook and cranny of the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, which was transformed into a mega space perfectly suited for an artiste of his calibre.
“It was such a blessing to see the turnout in Kingston on Sunday night. I was surprised but not so surprised because they have been asking for this show since March, and it’s just amazing to see people who have been supporting me from day one and people from Virgonation Movement just coming together. It feels like one big family reunion. Big up to Kingston and we are forever grateful for the love and support that I felt,” Virgo told THE STAR in a post-performance interview. He is currently touring in support of his new album, The Gentle Man.
It was a night of many highs. For example, Virgo’s friends such as Chris Martin, Agent Sasco, Jesse Royal and Protoje joined him at various times to thrill the fans. There was the big entrance from ‘The Chairman of the Board’ himself, Beres Hammond, that sent the crowd into a frenzy, which Virgo described as “history-making”. Then there was the two-minute, show-stopping, real life drama that saw Virgo slump down on the stage eight minutes into his performance.
Many persons thought that him sitting down on the stage at 11:09 p.m. was somehow a part of the act, but it wasn’t, and his band members and wife frantically rushed to him. Prayers were sent up and in less than two minutes, it was all over. A restored Virgo jumped up took the mic and asked twice with much vigour: “Who God bless?”
The full house at Ranny Williams shouted, “No man curse!” Virgo then performed for more than an hour and 40 minutes, thrilling fans and enjoying himself as if nothing untoward had happened.
“It is so hard to explain what happened on stage because this has never happened to me,” he told THE STAR.
“It was just a moment when I felt like I needed to just pause this. And so, the only thing I could have done was to sit down. And it was so nice to see my wife and my team surround me .... they were praying. And within seconds I was good again and in that moment I knew that I was good enough to do the show. I could see it on the faces of everybody who was there that they were very worried ... for about the next two songs. And the moment when I told them that I was fine was when everybody was back to the show itself,” the Who Feels it Knows it singer explained.
He added, “Things like these will happen whatever you do in life and you just have to find ways to bounce back. I am grateful because it could have been worse. I am happy that it wasn’t and I was able to pull off the show.”
Virgo is coming off a gruelling season of sold-out concerts in New York – where he performed at two shows – Connecticut and Philadelphia in the US.
