Christmas in 5 ... with Agent Sasco
As the magic of Christmas fills the air, entertainer Agent Sasco shares why this season holds a special place in his heart. For the proud husband and father of three, it's a time for family, gratitude, and creating unforgettable memories -- a theme he explores in THE WEEKEND STAR's 'Christmas in 5' feature.
The talented artiste, born on December 22, is celebrating 25 years in music and is laser-focused on staging a monumental one-night-only concert, dubbed Grateful, set for December 29 at The UWI Bowl in S. Andrew.
1. What is the best thing about Christmas?
"Christmas has always just been its own vibe; being born just three days before Christmas, personally for me, is just a time of the year that has significance to me, being around the time of my birthday. To some extent, that kinda set a way, because, instead a you having two events, yuh pretty much have it wrapped into one - suh Christmas and mi birthday just become one thing.
But again, the attitude of gratitude says, 'Instead of looking at it as a bad thing, you can consider that a good thing'. So, Christmas is really just a time a year that I really enjoy because it feels different from the regular year. It is usually cooler and, of course, the Christmas decorations - the lights, di dis and di dat, is just a whole different vibe.
I also enjoy the Christmas spirit because people are just in a different vibe and a different mood than the rest of year. Then you have the food, that's a part of it - the sorrel and Christmas cake ... different food start cook yah now - gungo peas and rice and whatnot. It's just a time that people look forward to ... even if it's just for a few days, people try to be around family. I think family is the best part of Christmas."
2. Are there any special traditions you observe at Christmas?
"I think we have developed a tradition where I don't wear the pajamas, I guess. I am deliberate about it. It has evolved into a tradition, but I don't wear it; I had to reserve a little bit of rebelliousness. My wife and the kids, they all wear their pajamas, but I don't. So that's the tradition for me."
3. How do you make sure the holiday spirit is alive and well for you and your loved ones?
"That's not my role, actually. The person that really keeps that flame burning brightly is my 13-year-old daughter, Lauren. She's very much into Christmas and facilitating everything that needs to happen. If we were to all vote as to who is the person who is most into the Christmas spirit, that would definitely be Lauren ... . And not just Christmas but in general. Whatever holiday is around, she is just the one who is into all of that.
But it is just a time where being around family is enough for me - family and food and just hanging out and good vibes."
4. What's the most meaningful gift you've received at Christmas?
"Every gift is meaningful because it is someone giving something that they didn't have to. Again, gratitude dictates that mi affi just give thanks fi whatever it is, especially knowing I'm not owed anything. As a big man, anything yuh gimmie, I'm like, 'Wow, thanks.' Because you never needed to, and it would be a real disservice to other gifts to pick one as the most meaningful. Suh every gift weh mi eva get, give thanks and mi really appreciate it. Every gift weh mi get a mi favourite gift."
5. What does the phrase 'Christmas is about giving' mean to you?
"Giving equals giving what you have. If it means that a just time yuh have fi spend, well, spend dat wid di people dem (family and friends) who need yuh time and yuh presence. Suh just give what you can, whether it be time or otherwise, and give to those who can do with some receiving."
Bonus question: What's your one wish for Christmas?
"My wish for Christmas is that everyone will indeed have a fulfilling Christmas season, not just the day, but certainly the very best for 2025. I will that everyone will demonstrate gratitude and embrace what it really means for your life."
