Guns, ammunition seized in 'Get The Guns' campaign

Police officers continue to reap success and strengthen their operational capabilities under the 'Get the Guns' campaign, which has led to the seizure of three firearms, nine rounds of ammunition, two persons being taken into custody, and one man being fatally shot during a confrontation with the police in one day.

The St Mary police reported that at about 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, lawmen attached to the Port Maria Police Station carried out a search at a high school in the parish during which a 16-year-old male student was searched. His knapsack was also searched and four .45 cartridges found. He was escorted to the Port Maria Police Station and placed in custody.

In Yallahs, the police reported that at about 3 p.m. an operation was carried out along the 9 Miles main road, which led to the seizure of a .38 revolver and the recovery of a motor car that had been reported stolen. One man was arrested in connection with the seizures.

Additionally, in St Catherine, at about 5:45 p.m., lawmen in Spanish Town seized a .357 Python Magnum revolver along with two .357 rounds of ammunition during an operation in the Quarry Hill district. Reports are that four men ran upon seeing the police. The area was searched and the firearm and ammunition found.

On Thursday, at about 2:20 a.m. in the Kingston Western Police Division, officers attached to the Hannah Town Police Station seized a 9mm pistol and three rounds of ammunition during an operation. One man was also fatally shot. He has been identified as Dwayne Harley, otherwise called 'Grizzly Bear', of Oxford Street, Hannah Town, Kingston.

The matter has been reported to the Independent Commission of Investigations.

The JCF continues its appeal to citizens to collaborate with the police on the 'Get the Guns' initiative geared at eliminating illegal weapons in the hands of criminals in Jamaica.

Monetary incentives (rewards) will be offered to persons who provide information that leads to the seizure of illegal guns and ammunition.

Members of the public are being asked to call Crime Stop at 311 or 811, the police 119 emergency number, or the nearest police station to report illegal weapons, wanted persons or suspicious individuals in their communities. Citizens may also submit tips and information using the Stay Alert App from Google play store.
