Elderly man dies in Christmas Day accident

"Everyone, everywhere is sharing Christmas cheers and this is what has

befallen us on Christmas day," said Elaine Grant, sister of 76-year-old Rupert Grant, who perished in a motor vehicle accident early Christmas Day morning in Bucknor, May Pen, Clarendon.

When THE STAR visited the Grant's home in the Rectory Road area of May Pen, Elaine Grant explained that her brother had spent Christmas Eve in Portmore, St Catherine, but had to leave Portmore early Christmas Day morning to see his son and

brother, who were visiting from the United States.

After journeying from Portmore to May Pen, Rupert Grant boarded a taxi to his home in Bucknor, and on reaching his gate, the driver somehow lost control of the motor car, which slammed into his gate, killing him on the spot.

"His neck is broken, he was bleeding from his mouth and nostril, plus other injuries he sustained," the sister said.

The May Pen police confirmed the incident.

"This is a tragic thing to happen to any family, especially on Christmas day. We have opened an investigation into the incident to determine what transpired," a police officer attached to May Pen police's traffic unit said.
