Mental exam ordered for murder accused

A young man accused of beating another to death was ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Charged with murder is 23-year-old Franz Simpson.

The court heard that on October 10 at 5 a.m., Simpson and the now deceased had an argument which escalated into a fight. It is said that during the fight, Simpson used a piece of iron to beat the man, who was later taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Simpson, who appeared bewildered while the allegations were being read, said," Your Honour, I have no knowledge of the case. I'd like some kind of medication. There is a doctor I used to see, I would feel more comfortable with him."

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey then ordered Simpson to visit a psychiatrist, who will determine if he is mentally fit to proceed with the case.

Simpson then made an additional request to see a prophet, while adding that he has another matter before the court for which he has no knowledge.

Pusey responded by saying, "I'm a prophet myself you know. Just go to my doctor and we will continue from there."

He is to return to court on February 15.
