Jolly time for Forum fisherfolk in Portmore

July 03, 2024

Ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Beryl, fisherfolk at the Forum Fishing Village in Portmore, St Catherine were either cooking or having a grand time at their Rum Party HQ bar or relaxing in their make-shift cottages.

According to both genders, who were seen inside the various establishments on the compound, it would be remiss of them to go to shelters or their actual homes during the storm.

For Robert Williamson, the first fisherman who was approached by our news team, he proudly stated that he lives in Kingston, but he rather be with his colleagues at the fishing village than the comfort of his own house.

“We have to help others that’s the boat nuh float weh go. We have to be here. We can’t just gone a we home and not know what taking place here. We have to see the area and the base,” Williamson said before showing the team his make-shift bed in a container.

“We have to be here just in case the wind gets so high and a boat gets loose and carry it out at sea, so we [are here] to capture it back and put it back in position,” he said.

For his colleague, he told our news team that he has to remain “on the base” because he is his brother’s keeper, and they all need each other.
