Majority of Manchioneal, Portland residents return home from hurricane shelter

July 04, 2024

Residents of Manchioneal, Portland who were housed at a disaster shelter during the passage of Hurricane Beryl on Wednesday have started to return home.

Additionally, the police, who were forced to abandon their station in Manchioneal to take up temporary stay at the Manchioneal All-Age School, along with a group of Haitians, have returned to their original post.

On Thursday during a check at the disaster shelter at the Manchioneal All Age School, it was revealed that 129 persons have so far returned to their homes following the passage of the hurricane.

Up to 1 pm Thursday, only seven people occupied that shelter.

Mayor Paul Thompson, who is also councillor for the Manchioneal division, said that 17 people checked into the shelter on Tuesday, but that by Wednesday morning, the figure grew to 136, as according to him, residents heeded the warning and decided that their lives were more important than property.
