Persons living in areas prone to flooding in Portmore, St Catherine are refusing to go into emergency shelters, according to Portmore Mayor Leon Thomas.

Thomas says Jamaica Urban Transit Company buses sent to areas left empty as residents did not want to leave.

"There are 16 shelters in the municipality with seven people occupying them. We are having problems from those on the Hellshire Beach and the Port Henderson Beach, despite the threat they are just not moving," Thomas said.

He was speaking at meeting of stakeholders at the corporation this morning.

He said that the support from agencies is very encouraging in preparing for the bad weather that will be associated with Hurricane Beryl.
