In a significant move to revitalise the agricultural sector and support farmers in their recovery efforts, the Government has announced a series of key initiatives under its comprehensive livestock programme. These measures aim to bolster local production and enhance the economic stability of Jamaica's farming community.

As part of the programme, 57,135 broiler chicks have been distributed to farmers across the island. Portfolio minister Floyd Green said the chicks are projected to produce approximately 104,957 kilogrammes of chicken meat. With the current market price of $660 per kilogramme, this initiative is expected to generate an impressive $69.27 million.

In addition, 57,635 ready-to-lay pullets have been supplied to farmers, anticipated to produce around 17.3 million eggs annually. Given the market price of $1,000 per flat of eggs, this initiative is projected to yield $576.35 million annually.

"This will not only enhance the financial stability of the farmers involved, but also contribute significantly to the economy," Green said.

The minister said that funds have been set aside to support small chicken farmers with birds, feed, and housing. He said that chicken production remains stable, and no significant disruptions are anticipated in this sector.

The island's agricultural sector has suffered over $1 billion in damage due to the passage of Hurricane Beryl. Green said livestock farmers, especially those producing poultry, were significantly affected.
