'Fat Girls Matter' is the message dancehall artiste Laa Lee hopes to send through his latest track with the same title.

The single, which was released on Monday, is currently number six on the local YouTube trending chart as it gained traction for its body positivity message.

Admitting that he too used to ridicule 'fat girls', Laa Lee said he came to the realisation some time ago that body shaming is wrong and wants to now use that epiphany to tell women to be comfortable in their own skin, big-boned and all.

"Mi usually make fun a my fat fren dem when mi younger, and over the years mi see whole heap a people fling dung fat girls. Dem call dem 'obese, overweight, big and fat and ugly', and they are human beings too. Dem have feelings like anybody else, and when we say things like dat, mi sure it make nuff a dem feel some kinda way," the entertainer said. "I did this song because I want fat girls to see that they're beautiful and their feelings do matter; and, most importantly, yuh have men out there that see dem as desirable."

But Laa Lee told THE WEEKEND STAR that he isn't just singing about respect for 'big girls', he would wholeheartedly embrace one as his wife if he found love.

"If mi did fi have a fatty, me wouldn't have fi worry 'bout nothing because me woulda have a personal teddy bear," he said. "Skinny girls always gwaan like a dem a carry the swing, but the fatty dem hot too and dem need loving and ratings, too."

Laa Lee said that in recent times, body shaming has led many women to resort to surgery to remove excess fat and give themselves a 'curvier' figure. The entertainer said while he is not bashing the women who chose to go that route, his song is geared at sending the message that it's OK to love the skin you're in.

"More while, all when yuh do yuh body, people still criticise and say how it nuh look good and yuh full a plastic. It best yuh stay how you are, embrace yourself in how you are. At the end of the day, it nuh even matter if yuh fat or slim, just enjoy your life," he said.
