Not true… JPS rejects WhatsApp messages about Hurricane Beryl blackout

July 02, 2024

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has rejected WhatsApp messages claiming that the country is to go into darkness tonight arising from the impending arrival of Hurricane Beryl.

JPS has called the messages fake news.

“The company has no such intention,” declared Director of Corporate Communications at JPS, Winsome Callum.

“The system will remain operational, for as long as it is feasible to do so,” she emphasised.

The light and power company is urging members of the public to check the official JPS communication channels for credible information.

Meanwhile, JPS is reminding the public that once the weather system has passed, depending on the severity, persons may experience outages for up to several weeks.

Restoration activities will commence after the company’s power delivery infrastructure has been assessed for readiness.

Essential services will be first in line, followed by major industrial zones and urban centres.

Small communities and individuals will be restored after the above groups.
