Messam motivated to score

Hoping to play his natural game, and not listen too much to critics, forward-player Gregory Messam Junior, who has been instrumental for St George's College, said he hopes to score more goals and win four titles this season with the North Street-based school.

STGC will begin their Walker Cup defence against Excelsior at the Constant Spring Field, today.

STGC have topped the Manning Cup scoring 39 goals so far, while conceding five.

Their main marksmen remain Alex Marshall on 12, Messam Jr with nine and captain Shevon Stewart with eight.

"We are under no pressure to win and get the job done. The coach has everything under control. We are a very mature team and we can get over certain obstacles, our objective is to win," Messam said.

Messam was speaking after scoring two goals and supplying the same in St George's final preliminary round match at Eltham on Tuesday. They won 4-0.

While his team has been criticised this season for not winning against opponents such as Denham Town and Innswood, the player said:

"We don't listen to spectators; we just focus on what we have to do. They can say what they want to say, but we will go out their and give our best as the coach tells us."

Messam Jr is the son of former Gregory Messam, who represented Jamaica senior men's national team.

"My personal goal is to win four titles, to help the team, and anyone would like to score as much goals as possible, so I have no limits," he added.
